Why is My Furnace Beeping? – and Other Furnace Questions Answered

Updated for 2018

Answers to furnace questionsAnyone who’s owned a furnace has at one point or another looked at their furnace and asked themselves a question.

“Why isn’t it working? Why is it costing so much money to run? When should I kick it to the curb?”

All of these questions are great, and we’re going to take this opportunity to answer some of them.

1. Why is My Furnace Beeping?

When your furnace starts beeping at you constantly, that’s its way of telling you that something isn’t operating correctly.

Unfortunately, we can’t get more specific until we inspect the furnace. If you do hear your furnace beeping, give us a call right away, and we’ll make an appointment to come see it.

2. Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air Instead of Heat?

There are a couple reasons your furnace could be blowing cold air.

You should first check your thermostat. Your thermostat controls the fan, and if it’s set to ON your furnace’s blower will continuously run, even if it’s not heating the air. We recommend setting your fan to AUTO to fix this problem.

Another potential cause is that your furnace overheated. When that happens, heat is turned off and the blower stays on in an attempt to cool down the furnace. The most common cause of an overheated furnace is a dirty, clogged air filter.

A clogged air filter causes your furnace to work harder, and it overheats. That’s why it’s so important that you clean or replace it every 30-60 days.

3. Does My Furnace Need an Annual Tune-Up?

Absolutely! Your furnace is essential in your home, and it needs to be taken care of the same way you would take care of a vehicle.

A furnace that’s used consistently experiences wear and tear like everything else. This leads to a greater risk of a breakdown and a loss of efficiency, which leads to more expensive heating bills. Lack of attention to your furnace could have terrible, even deadly consequences.

Scheduling an annual tune-up is a smart, safe way to keep your furnace running smoothly, and catch any potential disasters. So many 4 AM mid-winter furnace breakdowns could be avoided if the furnace received proper care.

4. When Should I Replace My Furnace?

Furnaces don’t last forever (how great would that be?) Eventually, it will need to be replaced.

A properly installed, well-cared for furnace can last as long as 20 years. But we recommend beginning to look for a new furnace when;

  • Your furnace is between 10 – 20 years old
  • Your furnace starts requiring frequent, costly repairs
  • Your heating bills become overly expensive, despite regular maintenance (furnaces will become less efficient as they age)

These are indicators that your furnace is on its last legs, and that you should begin shopping around for an energy-efficient replacement.

5. What Should I Look for in a New Furnace?
