What Do Our Technical Terms Mean?
BTU
This stands for British thermal units, a measure of the cooling power of your system. It tells you how much heat is being moved by the system per hour.
SEER
The higher the SEER number your system has, the more efficient it is. It stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio.
Heat Pump
Many air conditioners can also work to heat your home – all you need to do is reverse the flow of the refrigerant so you’re moving cool air outside instead of inside. Some heat pumps can even work when it’s below freezing.
Depending on how cold it is outside and the cost of electricity vs the cost of natural gas, a heat pump can help you get home heating at a lower cost than running your furnace. In Ottawa’s climate, a heat pump should be supplemented with a gas furnace for those extra cold days.
Split System and Mini-Split System
This refers to the fact that your air conditioner has 2 parts: the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. Central air conditioner systems can be referred to as split systems. To avoid confusion with central ACs, ductless air conditioners are sometimes called “mini” split systems.
Multi-Split
If you have multiple indoor units, each of which offers independent temperature control, it’s called a multi-split system.

How Do LG Ductless Air Conditioners Work?
LG ductless air conditioners come in the different varieties of indoor units noted above and a single outdoor unit – the system is “split” into these two categories. The ductless air conditioning systems come in whole house or room-by-room options for Ottawa homeowners. Additionally, all interior units have remote controls.
No ducts are needed for mini split air conditioners to work – all they require are refrigerant lines, and installation has no structural impact on your home.
