vänEE Ventilators We Carry
Here are the most common series/models we recommend to our customers. This table shows to overall highlights – if you need more details please get the advice of an Ottawa Home Services comfort expert.
Many of these models are available in both HRV (heat recovery ventilation) mode and ERV (energy recovery ventilation mode). Some can be easily switched between the two. The difference lies in ERVs providing fresh air that has been dehumidified.
Which do we recommend? It depends on your home. While we recommend ERVs a lot of the time, there are a couple of things to consider:
- ERVs are better in general year round. In summer, they transfer humidity from incoming air to the outgoing air, helping to keep the humidity level in your home within an acceptable range. If you used an HRV, it would be allowing more humid air to come in that your air conditioner would have to expend energy to remove.
- In winter, HRVs are great if you tend to get windows that sweat and frost up. If you tend to have extremely dry air, ERVs are better. This is because the transfer of humidity reverses (as compared to summer) and they take any humidity from outgoing air and transfer it to incoming air.

What The Ventilator Specs Mean
In the table above we’ve used some standards and terms you may wish to learn more about.
CFM
Ventilators will exchange the air in CFM, or cubic feet per minute. The higher the number the better; a residential heat recovery ventilator can move up to 200 CFM. The fan speed has different settings to allow for different living situations, and smaller CFM rates can be appropriate for small spaces.
Apparent Sensible Effectiveness (ASEF)
ASEF is the difference between the heat in the incoming air as compared to the outgoing air. It’s a measure of how well your HRV is retaining heat; the higher the number, the better.
