Here’s a guide to how the program works:

Step 1 – Register through Enbridge HER+ Program

How?

Visit the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus website and sign up!

Enbridge Canada

Step 2 – Book and complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

Why?

Before any work can begin, you need to have a registered energy auditor visit and evaluate your home. This fee is reimbursed by the government, up to $600.

Who do I call?

Finding a Registered Energy Advisor in your area is as simple as providing your postal code to find one near you. They will take “before” pictures and provide you with expert advice on what energy saving retrofits make the most sense for your home.

Important to know:

  • Save your documents! To qualify for reimbursement, you need proof the pre-retrofit evaluation was performed, and you must complete the entire Greener Homes Grant process.
  • The Registered Energy Advisor will provide you with an EnerGuide home rating and label, plus a Renovation Upgrade Report, Homeowner Information Sheet and an invoice. Save everything!

Optional Step – Apply for the Canada Greener Homes Loan

Loan Amount: $5,000 – $40,000
Repayment term: 10 years, interest-free
Loan Type: Unsecured personal loan on approved credit

Eligibility:

  • You must be eligible for and apply for the Canada Greener Homes Grant or the equivalent provincial program
  • You must be a Canadian homeowner, and your home must be your primary residence
  • You have completed a pre-retrofit evaluation of your home dated April 1, 2020, or later
  • You have a good credit history and aren’t under:
    • a consumer proposal
    • an orderly payment of debt program
    • a bankruptcy or equivalent insolvency proceeding

For more information, visit our Canada Greener Homes Loan page.

Important to know:

  • This loan does not apply to the following work:
    • work that you’ve already started or completed
    • retrofits that haven’t been recommended by an energy advisor
    • retrofits that are not eligible for a Canada Greener Homes Grant
    • retrofits that aren’t included in your application
  • To submit a form, log in to your Canada Greener Homes Grant account, and click the button to access the loan portal. To submit your application, you will have to upload documentation to the loan portal, such as:
    • your property tax statement
    • your driver’s licence or other government-issued ID, together with a utility bill
    • a confirmation of income and employment (for example, a job letter or a T4 slip)
    • your quotes from contractors

Step 3 – Complete your home retrofits

Who do I call?

Contact Ottawa Homes Services to install your recommended HVAC retrofits. We’ll complete your HVAC retrofits and provide you with the documentation required to obtain your rebate.

Step 4 – Book and complete your post-retrofit evaluation

Why?

The government requires that a post-retrofit evaluation be completed to obtain an accurate measure of energy saved and greenhouse gas emissions reduced as a result of the retrofits.

Important to know:

  • Your Registered Energy Advisor will return to your home to take “after” photos and perform the second evaluation.
  • The results will include your new EnerGuide rating and label, plus additional information about how to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Step 5 – Apply for and receive your reimbursement

How?

Submit all your required documents online via the Enbridge Gas website.

Important to know:

  • You’ll need to provide proof of your evaluations and the reports you’ve received from your Registered Energy Advisor, plus all invoices and receipts.
  • These federal grants are not taxable and do not have to be declared as income.

We hope this guide has helped you better understand the program and that you’ll join us in our effort to reduce carbon emissions. Steps like these will help Canada meet its climate change commitments and reach our goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
